NAC is a precursor to glutathione. NAC is highly valued primarily for its role in antioxidant production.

Along with two other amino acids — glutamine and glycine — NAC is needed to make and replenish glutathione.

Glutathione is one of the body’s most important antioxidants, which helps neutralize free radicals that can damage cells and tissues in your body. Glutathione plays crucial roles in nutrient metabolism and the regulation of many cellular events (gene expression, protein synthesis, cell proliferation, etc.)

It’s essential for immune health and fighting cellular damage. Its antioxidant properties are also important for combatting numerous other ailments caused by oxidative stress, such as heart disease, infertility and some psychiatric conditions.

Acetaminophen depletes glutathione and so NAC is often used in hospitals to counteract acetaminophen activity.

Note: To be safe, consider taking for one month at a time. Revisit with a practitioner to consider longer-term use.

Description

N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC) supplies N-acetyl-L-cysteine, a derivative of L-Cysteine, which is more stable and better absorbed than L-Cysteine.

NAC functions as a potent antioxidant. As the precursor to glutathione intracellular synthesis, it is essential for the synthesis of glutathione.

Glutathione is a critical component of the immune system, as it is an important intracellular water-soluble antioxidant. As part of this function, glutathione plays a vital role as the cofactor for the antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase and glutathione transferase.

Glutathione is also important to the liver, as the liver utilizes it for drug detoxification. As a metabolite of cysteine, NAC plays an important role in detoxification and is hepatoprotective. NAC functions in protecting cells against oxidative stress and contributes to important bodily reactions. As such it is a part of the defensive mechanism toward potential carcinogens, as well as against DNA damage.

The role of NAC in acetaminophen toxicity is widely documented, however, NAC contributes to other protective mechanisms as well, including drug conjugation and excretion, peroxide and free radical destruction, maintenance of the redox state of NADPH-NADP, acid-base balance, and the synthesis of sulfated compounds.

NAC also plays a role in the development of the central nervous system. There have been numerous studies using NAC, with COPD, particularly amongst patients who smoke.

Utilizing NAC in smokers with chronic bronchitis showed a significant reduction in the number of positive bacterial cultures in these patients. {Riise GC, et al. Eur Respir J.1994 Jan; 7(1):94-101.}

Another study utilizing NAC indicated potential benefits for chronic bronchitis, resulting in a significantly lower exacerbation rate in patients administered NAC, compared to placebo. {Rassmussen, JB & Glennow, C. Eur Respir J. 1988 Apr;1(4):351-5.}

Since it easily passes through cellular membranes, NAC has been shown to be readily absorbed. It is also resistant to enzymatic breakdown.

Dosage:

One (1) tablet per day. Not to exceed two (2) in 24 hours.

Recommend to take 1-2 months and then work with a practitioner to see if you should continue use.

Studies support the intake of about 1200-2400mg of NAC. It should be taken in 600mg 2-4 times daily. NAC is easily absorbed if taken on an empty stomach, preferably 1-2 hours before a meal.

Consider multi-minerals if you take NAC longer term, as NAC has been shown to reduce trace minerals.

Dosage for Specific Conditions:
The University of Michigan Health System notes the following daily doses were used in clinical trials evaluating NAC for various conditions: Bronchitis, 400 mg to 600 mg; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, 200 mg three times a day; angina, 600 mg three times a day; gastritis, 1,000 mg; HIV/AIDS, 800 mg.

General Antioxidant Support:

NAC’s antioxidant activities might help to contribute to overall health by reducing the cell damage that sets the stage for a host of diseases. The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests starting with 500 mg daily and slowly increasing with your doctor’s supervision. It reports doses higher than 7,000 mg could cause toxicity.
